Dry skin or any other skin type depends on hereditary characters or genes that are transformed from ones parents.
The main external factors that cause dry skins that you might not even know are:

1.Harsh soaps
Washing your face takes away the water content present in the skin and leaves it dry.It is necessary to use soaps with some ingredient that may serve as a moisturizer. Washing dishes or clothes by hand also makes it dry.It is helpful to use gloves for such purposes.Dry skin may cause irritation and itching which further makes the skin dry.

2.Being in water for a long time:
Staying in water for a long time by taking your time in swimming makes your skin dry.Chlorine present in the water absorbs the oily layer present in the skin and leaves it dry.The best remedy is to apply moisturizer before and after the swim.

3.Taking hot baths:
Hot water leaves the skin prone as the epidermis(upper skin) gets affected and the oil retaining capability is reduced.

4.You are on medication/having skin problems:
If you are on medication ,you experience itchiness on your skin. The best way to heal it is by improvising your diet.
If there is skin problem like eczema such that red spots occur due to dryness, it is best to visit a dermatologist and discuss the issue.

5.Weather:
Less humidity present in the atmosphere around leaves the skin dry.The moisture gets lost by either extremely cold or hold weathers which irritates the skin. The solution is to moisturize the skin frequently.
In cold weathers, leaving a bowl of water near the heater leaves the room humid.
